Who We Are
Established in 1964, Cannon Assurance had a wide footprint in Kenya with 5 regional offices across the country, offering a comprehensive suite of life and general insurance products.
Metropolitan Life Kenya, a subsidiary of Momentum Metropolitan Holdings “MMH” from South Africa, had been operating in Kenya since 2007, offering life insurance solutions to retail and corporate clients. MMH is an authorized financial services provider listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. It is one of the four biggest insurers in South Africa and has operations in several African countries (nine excluding South Africa), the United Kingdom, as well as in India. Metropolitan Life Kenya by 2013 held a solid position in the marketplace and managed to increase market share.
Following the acquisition of a majority stake in Cannon Assurance by MMH, Metropolitan Life Kenya successfully merged with Cannon Assurance at the beginning of 2015. After the merger, Metropolitan Cannon was born, and the life insurance licenses were consolidated into one, and retained the stand-alone general insurance license. Metropolitan Cannon (the combined business – Life & General) then became part of the MMH.
In 2022, our local shareholders of Metropolitan Cannon stepped forward to acquire MMH’s interest in Metropolitan Cannon. As the South Africa based MMH made the conscious decision to focus its interests on the southern regions of Africa, the local shareholders decided to secure our interests in the Kenyan sphere. Since its inception in 1964, the Cannon brand in insurance has stood the test of time in the Kenyan market and therefore it was a natural decision to reconnect with its roots and relaunch a ‘New’ Cannon as we evolve to meet the changing needs of our clients.
