The Assistant Underwriting Manager will be responsible for supporting the underwriting team in assessing risks, developing underwriting strategies, and managing the underwriting process. In collaboration with the underwriting manager, ensure adherence to company policies, and contribute to the achieving of the Company’s profitability and growth objectives.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the preparation, issuance, and renewal of insurance policies.
  • Ensure all policy terms and pricing are in compliance with regulatory and company standards.
  • Analyze and evaluate insurance applications to determine risk levels and appropriate coverage.
  • Support the development and enforcement of underwriting guidelines and policies.
  • Assist in reviewing and approving complex or high-value cases.
  • Provide guidance and training to underwriters to enhance their skills and knowledge.
  • Act as a point of contact for resolving underwriting-related queries from the team and intermediaries.
  • Maintain strong relationships with agents, brokers, and clients to support business growth.
  • Participate in client meetings to explain underwriting decisions and negotiate terms when necessary.
  • Conduct periodic portfolio reviews to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Assist in developing underwriting strategies to achieve business objectives and profitability.
  • Prepare reports and presentations on underwriting performance, trends, and recommendations for management.
  • Negotiating of reinsurance treaties, facultative and claims recoveries

Qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in insurance, Risk Management, Business Administration or a related field.
  • A qualification equivalent to ACII/IIK is mandatory.
  • Minimum 7-10 years of experience in General insurance underwriting, with at least 3 years in a supervisory position.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Proficiency in underwriting software and tools.
  • Knowledge of insurance regulations and industry standards.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Deep understanding of general insurance products, policy terms, conditions, exclusions, and endorsements.
  • Knowledge of underwriting guidelines, risk assessment, and rating models.
  • Awareness of relevant insurance laws, regulations and Industry standards
  • Awareness of market trends, competitor products, and industry innovations to ensure competitiveness.
  • Understanding of the claims process, including how underwriting decisions affect claims outcomes.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, clients, and other stakeholders, ensuring long-term business success.
  • Ability to support and collaborate with underwriting teams, mentor junior underwriters, and foster teamwork.
  • Demonstrating leadership in guiding decision-making and fostering a positive work environment.
